On the 16th of December 2021, just days before the holidays, Typhoon Rai made landfall on the islands of the Philippines. With winds at 160 mph, it became a Category 4.
Within one day, Typhoon Rai strengthened from a Category 1 to 5, making it extremely difficult for residents to prepare and evacuate away from the storm. As of the 3rd of January 2022, the chief of national disaster agency reported 407 deaths, 78 people missing and 1,150 people injured. The overall damage is estimated to be around AUD$643 million dollars.
At AMS, we have employees whose homes and families were directly affected by Typhoon Rai. We urgently acted to provide them assistance. Our relief distributions included food packs and hygiene kits such as canned food and litres of water.
